Most of the waste collected in Grand Rapids is trucked over to the waste-to-energy plant on Market Avenue in Southwest GR. Here, the waste is incinerated and energy is harnessed to power the City.
Since December of 2012, this facility has helped generate 2.16 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, 1.35 million pounds of steam, recycled 115,000 tons of metals, and reduced landfill waste by 90% (by volume).
When placing a dumpster in front of your house…
You may need a Temporary Occupancy Permit (TOP) if the dumpster blocks any public right-of-way, such as a street or sidewalk.
If the dumpster is to be placed on private property, you may still need to request permissionfrom the Zoning Department. Give them a call at 616-456-3031.
